Resistance and the Five Hindrances
Resistance and the Five Hindrances
February 4, 2023 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Resistance and the Five Hindrances
Feb. 4 & Feb. 11, 2023 | 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
What are the forces and energies that keep us from realizing our intentions and ourselves?
Resistance to meditation, to practice, and activities in our daily lives often keeps us from being who we want to be and doing what we want to do. Buddha taught our resistance can be used as an opportunity to deepen our awareness and connection to practice. In the Mahastipatthana Sutta (The Great Discourse on the Establishing of Mindfulness), the Buddha instructed his students to use mindfulness of the five hindrances to observe when we are obstructed and times when we are not.
In this two-part workshop, David Ryūmon Dahl will introduce the Buddhist teaching of the five hindrances as a framework to identify and work with mind states that contribute to resistance in our practice and ultimately our lives. Participants will explore resistance through Buddhist teachings, discussion, self-exploration, team-building initiatives, and see how to use resistance as an opening to cultivate our practice.
Suggested Donation: Members: $40, Non-Members: $50
Please note that this is a 2-part workshop and to gain the greatest extent of all of the material that is going to be presented, you should mark your calendar and plan to attend both weeks.
Please register by February 2 by filling out the registration form and making your payment using the Soji PayPal site.
If you plan to attend virtually, please check the appropriate box on the registration form. A Zoom link will be provided to you on February 3, 2023.
PLEASE NOTE TO ENSURE EVERYONE’S SAFETY: Proof of vaccination with a booster shot is required within 6 months prior to the date you are attending Soji in-person and no cards will be accepted at the door. Please email a copy of your vaccination card to sojizencenter@gmail.com. Masks are required while inside the zendo.
