Zazenkai with Oryoki

Saturday, Nov. 15 | 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Soji Zen Center’s monthly one-day retreat (zazenkai) is a great way to experience a short, intensive meditation retreat. The day consists of zazen (seated meditation), kinhin (walking meditation), optional oryoki (ceremonial meal) and dokusan (interview) for in-person attendees.

Oryoki (often translated as “just enough”) refers to the ritualized method of mindful eating practiced in many Zen Buddhist communities. Participants will be guided through this meaningful practice during the lunch hour, and a vegan and gluten-free meal will be provided. The oryoki lunch is optional, and zazenkai participants may choose to make alternative meal plans during this time. If you do not own oryoki bowls, bowls will be provided or you will be instructed on how to assemble a temporary set for yourself.

The suggested donation for this event is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Please register by Nov. 12 to ensure that enough food is prepared for the entire group. If you choose to participate virtually, a Zoom link will be provided prior to the event. Payment can be made in person at Soji with cash or check (made payable to “Soji: Dedicated to the Study of Soto Zen Buddhism, Inc.”) or through PayPal.
